New Delhi: Delhi’s powerdistribution company BSES today announced the national capital’s electricity demand peaked at 6,998 Megawatt (Mw) today at 3:22 pm, the highest-ever recorded in the history of the city.
“It broke the previous record of 6,934 Mw created on June 8, 2018. This is an increase of over 200 per cent over the peak power demand of 2,879 Mw in 2002,” the company said in a statement, adding the peak power demand in BRPL’s areas of South and West Delhi today clocked 3,031 MW and 1,555 MW in BYPL’s areas of Central and East Delhi.
BSES also said it has made arrangements for sourcing adequate electricity to meet the power demand of the 400,000 consumers served by its discoms. This includes long-term PPAs and banking arrangements with other states including Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and Bhutan.
“BSES discoms will get up to 665 MW of power through banking arrangements. Additionally, around 150 MW of renewal energy from Himachal Pradesh and around 20 MW from Rajasthan will further boost the power arrangements. In case of unforeseen contingencies because of low generation and outages of power plants, the discoms will purchase short-term power from the exchange,” the company said.
BSES discoms invested around Rs 900 crore last financial year (2017-18) to upgrade network and ramp up the capacity to 900 Mega Volt Ampere. The company said it has taken measures to ensure reliable power supply for consumers including preventive maintenance, strengthening of the call centres and load balancing at the sub-stations.
