Proposed Closure of Nashik Thermal Power Station units one by one wef Year 2011, without sanction of replacement units.

Posted On : September 05, 2018

It has been observed that many of the NTPC 210 MW units working under control of central government are still running and not decommissioned till this date. However on the other hand many of the 210 mw sets under control of Maharashtra government (managed by Mahagenco) are decommissioned from last few years one by one.

2. As per recent developments it is learnt that Nashik unit no.3, 4, 5 (210 x 3 MW) are proposed for decommissioning one by one from year 2019 onwards. Old units of NTPS (140 MW*2) have also been closed previously in year June 2011. While closing of these units it was proposed to replace these units by 660 MW supercritical technology plant. However as per MERC Case 154 of 2018 it is learnt that replacement unit of 660 MW has been shifted to Umred (Nagpur).

3. Nashik thermal power station has been awarded for highest plant load availibility in Mahagenco for FY 2012-13 TO FY 2015-16. Nashik has also got Black diamond award for coal handling plant for efficient coal handling in all the Mahagenco units. This TPS has been awarded  second prize in 11th state level energy conservation award by MEDA in year 2015-16.

4. It is learnt that replacement unit of 660 MW which was committed for NTPS is being shifted to Umred (Nagpur) and except Nashik all other working plants have got replacement units which is injustice with citizens of Nashik and employees of Mahagenco working In NTPS and many of its dependents. The following replacement units have been commissioned against decommissioned units at respective locations in Mahagenco, Maharashtra.

1)   Parli-               250 MW *3 Unit

2)   Bhusawal-       500 MW*2 Unit

3)   Paras-             250 MW *2 Unit

4)   Koradi-             660 MW*3 Unit

5)   Chandrapur-    500 MW*2 Unit

6)   Khaparkheda – 500 MW.

5. Besides this in other states also wherever old units are being closed these are replaced by new supercritical units. Recently UP Govt has sanctioned 660 MW unit at Panki after closure of two 110 MW Units and has sanctioned two 660 MW units at Obra where three 100 MW Units are closed.

6. It is learnt that as per previous proposal vide letter  P&P/GOM/Nashik/1*660MW /no.0272/ Dt.10/02/2015, basic infrastructure like land, water, (Godavari River) ,railways, roadways were readily available for 660 MW unit at NTPS Eklahare, Nashik  but due to unknown reasons replacement unit of 660 MW has been shifted to Umred (Nagpur).

7. Nashik Thermal Power Station issue was discussed in All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) Federal Council Meeting held at Hyderabad on 18th August 2018. AIPEF resolved that decision of closure of Nashik Thermal Power station units one by one without sanction of replacement by supercritical units is not in the larger interest of Maharashtra. Therefore It is requested to arrange for commissioning of 660 MW plant as per earlier commitment at Nashik or propose R & M scheme for Unit 3,4,5 of Nashik TPS to enhance residual life not only in interest of state but also for survival of employees, labours and their dependents for industrial growth and for grid stability as Nashik is nearer to load centre.

8. AIPEF requests you to kindly use your good offices and direct  authorities of MSPGCL to keep NTPS units running till replacement supercritical units are sanctioned for survival of Northern Maharashtra development as it is the only Govt. Owned Thermal power station in this region.

Thanking you with regards.

    Yours faithfully,
