Norms mandate local sourcing of gear for new power projects Jan 17, 2019

NEW DELHI: Upcoming, coal-fired and hydropower stations and transmission lines will have to purchase equipment locally, as per new guidelines issued by the central government. 

The norms, published on the power ministry’s website on Tuesday, will apply to power plants and transmission lines being set up by government-owned firms as well as private projects being funded by state-run Power Finance Corp and Rural Electrification Corp. 

EThad on May 30, 2018 first reported that the 

government is considering a public procurement mechanism with purchase preference to domestic equipment manufacturers for future electricity generation, transmission and distribution projects. 


The power ministry has issued three separate orders for new thermal, hydro and power transmission projects. 

The orders contain an exhaustive list of equipment along with the local content requirements to be met by power firms.
