RUPNAGAR : The All India Power Engineers’ Federation (AIPEF), demanded the restructuring and integration of all unbundled power utilities on Thursday.
The demand was put forward to facilitate better coordination and consumer service in states across India.
In a letter written to the Union minister of state for power, RK Singh, the AIPEF said that the Union government should introduce a separate section in the National Electricity Policy to integrate the state power sector.
The letter states that after the enactment of the Electricity Act, 2003, different states restructured the state electricity boards unilaterally, as per their wishes.
It said there is a wide diversity in the structure of state power utilities across the country. While many states retain the entire state under one distribution company (discom), in some states, there are multiple discoms including five in Karnataka, five in Uttar Pradesh (UP), three in Madhya Pradesh (MP) and two in Haryana.
In Punjab and Tamil Nadu, the generation and distribution are retained in one company while the transmission is separated out. In Kerala and Himachal Pradesh, the integrated structure of generation, transmission and distribution is retained in one company.
The AIPEF said in several states, a separate coordination body has been created which controls multiple discoms.
COMPANIES’ LOSSES INCREASING
Spokesman of AIPEF, VK Gupta, said unification is need of hour to avoid unnecessary wasteful administrative expenditure.
