Punjab’s power supply rose by around 9.66 percent to 45950 lakh units in April as compared to last year's supply of 41900 lakh units in April 2023 as per Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) reports, mainly due to a rise in temperatures. The daily average supply in April increased from 1396 LU to 1532 LU this year. The highest supply in a day (peak power demand) also rose to 10061 MW in April 2024 as against 7500 MW in April 2023. The maximum electricity demand was 9986 MW in April 2022. Punjab has seen a consistent rise in the power demand. According to an estimate, the peak demand for electricity is said to increase by another 1000 MW and may touch the 16,300-MW mark this summer. The maximum power demand in the last financial year was 15325 MW. This year PSPCL’s thermal generation supply was 1002 lakh units against last year’s supply of 6000 lakh units. This is mainly due to the taking over of Goindwal Sahib Thermal in the state sector and the increased PLF of the plant due to better coal stock. The increase in power consumption as well as growth in demand was mainly due to an increased domestic free electricity supply of 300 units per month and industrial supply. The demand for power as well as consumption will continue to see robust growth with the onset of paddy season from mid-June. The PSPCL makes banking arrangements for up to 3000 MW from June to September to meet the power demand from several states. The PSPCL expects to draw 931 million units ( MU) followed by 1510 MU, 2319 MU, and 1698 MU in the next three months from July to September. The total banking of power in four months is expected to be around 6419 MU. Short-term power purchases during the coming paddy season will be around 1990 MU. The maximum short-term purchase will be in August 2024 around 1000 MU. A senior PSPCL said that we are hopeful that all power consumers in the state will be provided continued, uninterrupted, and required power supply during the season, which is likely to witness a surge in demand. Short-term power purchases during the coming paddy season will be around 1990 MU. The maximum short-term purchase will be in August 2024 around 1000 MU.
